Older people are at increased risk of functional decline in hospital. This project aims to develop and trial a new Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) to capture the patient perspective on their health outcomes and level of independence following an acute inpatient admission.

Developing a New Measurement Tool

In order to develop the new PROM we will review the current evidence on measures of functional decline for older people in acute hospital settings as well as consult with clinicians and patients.

We will also conduct an environmental scan of Victorian health services to determine current variations and trends in the screening and comprehensive assessment of common risks for harm during an older person’s hospital admission.

Implementation and Evaluation

The new PROM will be trialled in an acute hospital setting within one metropolitan and one regional Victorian health service. Evaluation will include completion rates, review of hospital-reported data and clinician/patient experience.
