Professor Allan McLean was Director of NARI from 2003 – 2007.  During this time, he also held   positions as Director of Aged Care and Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Melbourne. 

As a young man Professor McLean attended Monash University where he studied Medicine and then a Bachelor of Medical Science, which set him on the research track he followed for the rest of his life.

From 1978 to 1995 he held senior appointments at the Alfred Hospital in general medicine, vascular medicine and hypertension, was Foundation Director of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and a member of the Board of Management.

His research and clinical work took him to the emerging discipline of geriatric medicine in which he retrained clinically.  In 1995 he was appointed as Director of Geriatric Medicine, Canberra Hospital and Director of Geriatric Medical Services ACT Health, contributing significantly to the development of those services.

During his career he published over 200 papers in refereed journals and was an enthusiastic supervisor to young medical scientists.  Vale Professor McLean.
