The Australian Department of Health commissioned NARI to undertake a National Aged Care Research Roundtable Project to identify priority research areas for aged care reforms. These reforms include those announced by the Australian Government in the 2021-22 Budget, in response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

The aged care reforms build on five pillars over five years and represent a substantial structural increase in the level of funding for aged care. The identified research priorities will be provided to the Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, and the Minister for Health and Aged Care, for consideration in the design of the National Aged Care Research Strategy.

The project involved three activities:

  1. A gap analysis of research on aged care in Australia (this includes a review of literature and consultations)
  2. Two half day National Aged Care Research Roundtable Workshops
  3. A survey to validate and refine the priorities discussed at the workshops.
