This year guests will learn more about NARI’s research into dementia. While not a normal part of ageing the incidence of dementia increases with age, with almost one in 10 people over 65 with the condition, increasing to three in 10 aged over 85. It is the second main cause of death in Australia and the leading cause of death for women.
NARI Director Briony Dow said that despite these statistics, dementia is poorly understood in our community.
“This is partly due to stigma, especially in culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Stigma can lead to denial of symptoms and delay in help seeking as well as social isolation and discrimination against the person living with dementia.”
Funds raised will support The National Ageing Research Institute’s (NARI) research program.
