Professional Development Workshop: Strategies for tackling loneliness in aged care

Depression, anxiety and loneliness are common experiences and challenging to wellbeing and health outcomes. It is estimated that 10% of older people in the community experience significant anxiety and depression. These rates are often higher for people with chronic illness and those living in residential aged care. It has also been reported that loneliness increases the likelihood of experiencing depression and being depressed increases the likelihood of being lonely.

How can people working in aged care with older adults (living in residential aged care and in the community) assist in the management of depression, anxiety and loneliness? This evidence-based interactive workshop will draw on the experience and expertise of participants. Participants will learn about:

- The psychology behind depression, anxiety and loneliness, how common they are and what causes them

- Strategies to prevent depression, anxiety and loneliness in older people living in both the community and residential care
