The National Ageing Research Institute is sad to announce the passing of volunteer Mehmet Nuri Varol.

Mehmet was a kind, hardworking individual with a profound joy for learning.

Born in Turkey in 1951, he graduated from Istanbul Technical University with a degree in electronics engineering, and was later awarded a NATO scholarship to attend the University of Michigan where he received his Master’s degree in nuclear engineering.

Mehmet has worked for the Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council, Ericsson Australia and Ericsson Netherlands for a combined total of 27 years.

He was a respected member of multiple projects across NARI including the BEFRIENDAS project, during which he regularly visited a resident at Blue Cross in Ivanhoe and continued to keep in contact by phone when COVID-19 hit.

Mehmet was also a member of the MARC Community Advisory Group.

He will be remembered as a very kind person who was always keen to learn and provide advice.

Mehmet passed away on the 23 December 2020 and will be missed by many, especially his wife and two daughters.
